Aveni Foundation is committed to expediting development of gene-targeted therapies for osteosarcoma and other cancers.
Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for nearly 10 million deaths and 21 million new diagnoses in 2024 (World Health Organization, 2026; American Cancer Society, 2026). Osteosarcoma is a relatively rare form of cancer, with an overall annual incidence of three to five new cases per million globally, about 1,000 of which are diagnosed in the United States. However, it remains the most common primary bone cancer in children, teens, and young adults from 10 to 30 years of age.
The foundation is named in honor of Fr. Joseph Aveni, RCJ, a Rogationist priest who experienced significant clinical benefit from DeltaRex-G, a gene targeted therapy (Intl J Oncol 36:1341-1353, 2010), and whose cause of canonization is ongoing.
